Born May 4, 1937 at Hanley, Glen Hass has made an important contribution in the areas of agricultural extension, soil conservation and 4-H leadership. He obtained a BSA in 1960, a Bachelor of Education in 1965 and Master of Continuing Education in 1976.
He taught at Aden Bowman Collegiate in Saskatoon until joining the University of Saskatchewan extension staff in 1969 as 4-H Supervisor for Saskatchewan . Ten years later he was promoted to Associate Director of the Extension Division.
In the agricultural education field he championed the inception of the Certificates in Agriculture program and the Master of Science in Agriculture Extension graduate degree.
Glen was a strong advocate of soil conservation. In 1987 he was instrumental in organizing the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association, an organization that promoted soil conservation throughout Saskatchewan . In 1995 he assumed the position of Executive Director of Soil Conservation Canada. Under his leadership a network of soil conservation associations was established to promote best management practices in soil and water conservation in every province in Canada . In recognition of this leadership Glen was inducted into the Canadian Conservation Hall of Fame.
His involvement as a youth with the Hanley 4-H Grain Club and the Dundurn 4-H Beef Club proved useful to his later career as Saskatchewan 's 4-H Supervisor. He served on the Canadian 4-H Council and in 1977 was elected president. For his contributions to 4-H he received the Commemorative Medal on Canada 's 125th birthday.
In 1993 Glen left the university to set up a consulting firm that provided services to agricultural organizations in strategic planning, organizational leadership and administration. The same year Glen took over as Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists, a post he held until 2004. He provided leadership in revising the Agrologists Act that ensures agrologists maintain a high standard of professionalism in service to the Saskatchewan agri-food industry. His work was recognized nationally when he was named a Fellow of the Agricultural Institute of Canada.
Over the years Glen has been recognized for his commitment to agriculture and adult education. He received an honorary life membership from the Canadian Society of Extension and the International Service Award for extension and adult education from the Northwest Adult Education Association.
