Clayton Hobman has provided leadership in the farming community with long-standing involvement in local, provincial and national organizations.
Born in Nokomis in 1938, Clayton attended school in Lockwood and then took a Farm Mechanics course at Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon. He started farming in 1957. In 1960, he married Margaret Ann and they had four children.
Two of the boys followed Clayton’s lead and became involved in the family farm. The farm includes a sizable cropped acreage, a cattle herd, the raising of purebred Percheron horses and the feeding of heavy horses for export to Japan.
The Hobman kids all grew up riding and caring for horses. For many years, Hobman Farms showed their horses at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina and often at shows in Toronto and Calgary.
Clayton represented the horse industry serving as president of the Canadian Percheron Association, Saskatchewan Horse Breeders Association, Saskatchewan Livestock Association and Saskatchewan Riding Club. He also served as a committee member of Canadian Western Agribition and Regina Buffalo Days.
For 20 years, Clayton served as reeve of the Rural Municipality of Wreford No. 280. He was also president of the Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Association for three years and for a dozen years he represented the association on the board of the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame.
Locally, he was involved with the Lockwood 4-H Club, Nokomis United Church, Nokomis Credit Union, Nokomis Hospital Board, Long Lake School Unit board, the Kinsmen, Nokomis Health Centre Foundation and Lockwood Community Club.
In all of the organizations in which he was involved, Clayton was an active participant, working for the betterment of the industry.
Clayton Hobman passed away in May of 2008, just months before being inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame.
