1944 -
Audrey Horkoff has made contributions to many facets of agriculture within Saskatchewan, including as chair of Canadian Western Agribition and co-chair of ACRE, the Action Committee on the Rural Economy. Born Audrey MacLean at Kamsack in 1944, she has been an involved person both locally and provincially.
After the death of her first husband in a farm accident in 1975, Audrey chose to continue to operate their grain and cow-calf operation including a purebred Charolais herd while raising their three children.
After marrying Don Horkoff in 1977, they continued to maintain both the purebred Charolais and Polled Hereford herds that each brought into the partnership. Later on, they started an organic operation on their 5,500 acre land base. Audrey and Don were active on the cattle show circuit and have many awards to their credit.
Audrey became involved in the Charolais Association and served as a director and as president of the Saskatchewan branch. She also served on the board and executive of the Canadian Charolais Association.
Audrey was elected to the Canadian Western Agribition Board and served on numerous committees in what at the time was a male dominated domain. It was a mark of the respect she commanded that she was elected President of Agribition in 1997.
In 2000, when the Saskatchewan government decided to do an extensive consultation exercise on the future of rural Saskatchewan, they turned to Audrey to co-chair ACRE, the Action Committee on the Rural Economy. Through her skills of listening and finding common ground, Audrey was able to lead the committee to consensus on a number of important recommendations for legislative and policy change. This was a tremendous feat given the independent nature of rural leaders and the broad spectrum of viewpoints.
ACRE was considered a great success. It has been copied as a model in a number of jurisdictions in Canada and around the world.
Audrey has been a concerned and involved person at all levels of rural life from 4H leader to President of Chapter Six of the Organic Crop Improvement Association International. She has received a number of awards for her efforts including an Honorary Life Membership in the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists.
Audrey and Don are at their best hosting their large family of children and grandchildren.
